Hybrid AHF and Capacitor Compensation Cabinet: Two Jobs, One Enclosure

Most industrial sites need both harmonic mitigation and power factor correction. Installing two separate systems doubles the footprint, the switchgear, the cabling and the maintenance workload. A hybrid compensation cabinet combines a stepped capacitor bank with an active harmonic filter in one enclosure and one control system.

Why combine active and passive compensation

Capacitors are the most economical way to supply large amounts of reactive power. Active filters are the most precise way to cancel dynamic harmonic current. Used together, the capacitor bank handles the steady reactive demand while the AHF cleans harmonics and covers fast reactive variations that a switched bank cannot follow.

  • Target performance: THDi below 5% and power factor above 0.95
  • Capacitor stages: detuned reactors to avoid resonance with the supply
  • Active stage: 2nd to 50th harmonic compensation with under 10 ms response
  • Control: single controller coordinating capacitor steps and AHF output
  • Enclosure: IP20 to IP54, floor-standing, with forced-air cooling

Avoiding the classic resonance trap

Adding plain capacitors to a network that already has significant 5th and 7th harmonic content can create a parallel resonance that amplifies distortion and destroys capacitors. Detuned reactors raise the resonant frequency safely below the 5th harmonic, and the AHF removes the residual harmonic current that would otherwise circulate. The combined design must be checked against the measured harmonic spectrum, not against a generic assumption.

Applications with the fastest payback

Automotive plants, plastics injection moulding, textile mills and commercial buildings with large chiller loads all combine high reactive demand with VFD-generated harmonics. In these sites the hybrid cabinet reduces electricity penalties, releases transformer capacity and avoids a second installation later.

Specification checklist

  • Measured harmonic spectrum and reactive demand profile over a full production week
  • Transformer rating, short-circuit level and existing compensation equipment
  • Required power factor target and the utility's harmonic limits
  • Step size and switching strategy for the capacitor bank
  • Protection coordination between capacitor switching devices and the AHF
  • Communication protocol for integration with the plant energy management system

Project delivery advantage

A single cabinet means one supplier, one drawing set, one factory acceptance test and one commissioning team. For EPC contractors this removes interface risk between the capacitor vendor and the filter vendor, which is where most power quality projects lose time.
