Parallel Modular AHF: Scale from 15A to 600A Without Replacing Hardware

Harmonic loads rarely arrive at their final size. A plant adds a production line, a data hall fills with servers, or a charging hub doubles its chargers. Specifying a large monolithic filter on day one wastes capital; specifying too small forces an early replacement. Modular parallel AHF solves both problems.

How parallel expansion works

Each AHF module is a complete three-phase converter with its own current sensing and control. Modules are connected in parallel on the same bus and share the compensation task through a common controller or master-slave arrangement. Adding capacity means adding a module, not replacing the cabinet.

  • Module ratings: 15A, 25A, 30A, 50A, 60A, 75A, 100A, 125A, 150A, 200A, 300A, 400A, 600A
  • Parallel capability: up to 10 modules or cabinets, 1000A total in typical configurations
  • Mounting: 19-inch rack modules, wall-mounted units or floor-standing cabinets
  • Wiring: 3P3W and 3P4W, with neutral-rated modules for triplen harmonic duty
  • Control: automatic load sharing with N+1 redundancy options

Design rules that prevent problems later

Keep module cable lengths to the bus equal so current sharing stays balanced. Use one set of CTs for the total load and let the controller distribute demand, rather than giving each module its own independent CT. Reserve busbar and breaker space for the planned final capacity, even if you install fewer modules today.

Where redundancy matters, such as data centers or continuous process lines, configure N+1 so a single module failure does not remove all compensation. Alarm contacts should report module-level faults separately so maintenance can replace one unit without downtime.

Typical expansion path

  • Phase 1: 50A wall-mounted unit for the first production line
  • Phase 2: two 50A rack modules added for a second line, same controller
  • Phase 3: floor-standing cabinet with 300A capacity as the plant grows
  • Phase 4: parallel cabinets to 600A and beyond as the substation is upgraded

Commercial benefit

Staged investment improves cash flow and matches depreciation to actual load growth. Standard modules also shorten lead time and simplify spare-parts stocking: one spare module can protect an entire installed base of the same rating.

If neutral current from 3rd harmonic loads is part of the design case, pair this with our 3rd harmonic neutral current guide.
